Last year I found a packet of World War II love letters at an auction. Bundled together with cotton twine, they were an accounting of a love that stretched across the world between a couple named Helen & Irwin. He was in the Navy and at sea...a world away from their little life here in Illinois.
I have every letter written back and fourth...for almost every single day he was away from home. It is like being present for a conversation...I read his letter, then hers. They are sweet, sometimes romantic...but mostly I can see how much he missed her, and missed home and the simple things they shared.
The speak of going bowling together, how much he misses her cooking...and how he is saving his pay to buy them a new home when he gets home. She is saving dimes for their little 'nest egg'.
And I cannot tell you how much I love that he started each letter with "Dearest Darling Helen"...
and how beautiful it is that his first line of his Valentine letter simply started "Twilight is gradually coming upon us"...unknowingly, this simple man named Irwin from a small town in Illinois was writing a poetry, of sorts.
{sigh...}
So today I am wishing you a Valentine's Day full of the love like Helen & Irwin had.
Simple....and Sweet. Full of little joys and appreciation for love and life.
Happy Day, friends.

Very, very poignant . . . my favourite today . . .
ReplyDeleteHave you thought about doing a family trace . . .
So beautiful! And to think, with today's technology, love letters like this may never be written on paper again.

ReplyDeleteI have a similar set of letters between my grandparents from before they were married. She was at home with her mother and sister and he was looking for work along the East Coast (it was during the depression). When he finally got a stable job, I have the letters in which they planned their small wedding.
ReplyDeleteWhat a wonderful post. Happy Valentines Day to you also.

How beautiful, and lovely that you have them in your safe keeping. It always astounds me that such treasures are lost from families and just found for sale by strangers.............wouldnt it be lovely to return them to family who would treasure them.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great find! So sad that one of them took the care to save and they ended up at an auction.
ReplyDeleteOh my goodness, this has brought tears to my eyes... I'm not sure they're are any men like that anymore! =)
ReplyDeleteLove this. There was a story in a local paper today of a woman who bought a love letter in a n antique store. The couple was engaged and he was in the war. She tracked them down. They did marry and have been sweethearts ever since. Loved their story too.
ReplyDeleteLovely! In the world of email and constant communication its nice to reflect on the letters shared between lovers where the response in not instantaneous. I'm sure they are a delight to read and you are lucky to treasure them. I wonder if any current relatives know they exist. I would love to have love letters written between my grandparents - it would be an amazing gift!
ReplyDeleteSounds like those were amazing to read. We are British and my husband is a big WW II history fanatic, and he especially loves reading about the experiences of everyday soldiers. He'd love something like this for sure.
ReplyDeletethis is so cool...how romantic! i just love those airmail envelopes too!
ReplyDeleteSo sweet! I love it - I'm such a romantic and this really makes me teary!!! Do you know if he ever did come home safely to his wife (I'm sure he did...but wanted to be sure it was a "happy ending!")?!?!?! :) Wishing you a Happy Heart Day too!!! :)
